John WOOTTON (Snitterfield, 1686 - London, 1764) Chestnut hunting horse held by a groom Canvas Height : 101 cm Width : 128.5 cm Old restorations Provenance : Acquired from Arthur Ackermann, London in the 1950s (founded in London in 1783, the Ackermann Gallery renowned for its British paintings from the 18th to the 20th centuries). John Wootton was a contemporary of the French animal painter Alexandre-François Desportes, and established himself a leading figure in London high society. A founding member of the Royal Academy, he also Alexander Pope and John Gay. A regular visitor to Newmarket, Britain's leading of horse racing in Great Britain, where he painted numerous equestrian scenes. Today, several of his of his works are preserved in the historic Spencer family home. The main entrance to the estate, Wootton Hall, is named in his honor.
