Emblemata - Lot 27
Emblemata BERTHOD (François) Sacred Emblems, drawn from Holy Scripture and the Church Fathers, invented and explained in French verse. Paris, Loyson, 1665. 2 parts in one in-12 volume; a book of emblems illustrated with a frontispiece title page and 64 full-page allegorical engravings. Title page doubled; some illustrations doubled or reinforced on the spine; a few small tears in the text have been restored. Later Jansenist leather binding, ribbed spine, panels decorated with fleurs-de-lis, gilt title, fleurons in the spandrels on the covers, gilt lace on the inside, normal wear and scuffing. The engravings are among the most intriguing in the genre of emblemata; the work is rare.
