Approved at the Academy of painting in 1753, Jean Baptiste Perronneau stayed in Bordeaux on several occasions between 1747 and 1769. His fame as an academician enabled him to capture the city's rich clientele.
Many Irish Catholic families emigrated to France around 1750. Many of them chose to devote themselves to the Bordeaux wine trade, sometimes leaving their names to prestigious wineries such as the Clarke, Lynch, Kirwan or Mac Carthy.
Our model, Denis Mac Carthy was naturalized as a French citizen in 1756. Combining his title of nobility with the prosperity of his wine trade, he quickly became part of the social and economic fabric of the city. The recognition of his peers led him to be elected consul in 1766, then first consul a year later and judge of merchants in 1782 before becoming director of the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce. Part of the estate of Château Latour was sold to him as part of his activity. He is shown here in his judge's robe. The following year, he commissioned Perroneau to paint a second portrait, with that of his wife hanging (sale at the Drouot Hotel, 25 May 2010, lot n°71 p. 29).
With no children, the merchant brought in his nephews Daniel and Jean to assist him. They would keep their uncle's business running until 1828, probably giving their name to the Mac Carthy vineyard in Saint-Estèphe.
