History of the knights of the order of S. Jean de Hierusalem, containing their admirable institution & police, the outcome of the wars of the Holy Land, where they were found, & their continual travels, undertakings, battles, assaults & encounters. Previously written by the late S.D.B.S.D.L. & in this latest edition, divided by chapters, & increased with summaries on each book, & annotations in the margin, together with a translation of the establishments & ordinances of the religion by Jean Baudoin. The work is enriched with a large number of intaglio engravings, and illustrated with an ample chronology; with the eulogies of the serene grandmasters, with a summary of the privileges of the order, with some rulings, and with other very remarkable treatises, by F.A. de Naberat. (errata) - 14f. 127pp. (summary of privileges), 41pp. (for Malthe suppliante...), 66pp. (summary of the main privileges granted...), 6f. (general table and particular table of the Grand Masters). Illustrated with 7 maps and plans (4 of them folding) of Jerusalem, Ptolemaïde, Rhodes and the Valletta city of Malta, Ptolemaïde, Cyprus and Malta, and numerous engraved vignettes of portraits of personalities of the Order. Missing the general frontispiece, the frontispiece of "Summaries" 2 and 3, and pages 91-92 of the "Summaries" concerning Pierre de Ponté. Old handwritten notes in the margins, light banding at the beginning of the book and in the central part at the end of the volume, reinforcing strip at the back of the title page.
Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red title page, double cold fillet on the boards, rubbing and spotting, red edges.
Rare. French version, given by Pierre de Boissat and Jean Baudoin, of the great history of the Order of Malta in three parts by Giacomo Bosio. It had originally appeared in Italian in Rome in 1621, Bosio was a friar servant of the Order of Malta, then was appointed, in 1587, representative of the Order in Rome. The work is divided into 6 books: - A/ "History of the Order of Saint John of Hierusalem" in 2 parts - B/ Statutes of the Order of Saint John of Hierusalem - C/ Ordinances of the General Chapter held in 1703 by the Illustrious & Reverend Grand Master Brother Alof de Vignancourt - D/ Summary of the privileges granted to the Order (in 3 parts) - E/ Malthe supliant at the feet of the King - F/ Summary of the main privileges. The collation given by Saffroy is slightly different from ours (the general frontispiece, the frontispiece of the "Summaries" 2 and 3, as well as pages 91-92 of the "Summaries" concerning Pierre de Ponté are missing).
