OVID La Vita et Metamorfoseo d'Ovidio, figurato & abreviato in forma d'epigrammi di M. Gabriello Symeoni. Lione (Lyon), Jean de Tournes, 1559. In-8: 245pp, 27f; 188 vignettes by Bernard Salomon (known as Petit Salomon). Italian binding of old stiff vellum, smooth spine decorated, blond title-piece, green date-piece, gilt fleurons between fillets. First edition of the poetic version of Ovid's Metamorphoses given by Simeoni. These Metamorphoses are decorated with one of the most famous and exquisite suites of the French Renaissance, featuring engravings by Bernard Salomon, some of them in first printing. provenance: Ex libris imprimé biblotheca illris Ducis Thomae Vargas Macciucca. Duke Thomas Vargas Macciucca. By a diploma of King Alfonso XI in 1267, the family was granted the privilege of bearing the royal coat of arms of Castiglia e Leon. In the middle of the 17th century, the family took root in southern Italy under King Philip IV, also King of Naples. The 19th generation of Vargas was Thomas Vargas Macciucca, who was governor of Capua. In 1732 he was created "Duca de Vargas Machuca". In 1748 the family lived in the monumental palace "Real Monte di Manso" in Naples. He died in 1775.
