Botany - Lot 305
Botany PHILIBERT (J. C., LEGENDRE under the pseudo of) Exercises of Botany, for the use of beginners. Elementary work decorated with 157 plates. Paris, Bossange, 1801. 2 volumes large in-8 : 1f., 234pp. (70 plates) / 1f. 235-438pp. (87 plates). A total of 157 plates as announced. Modern marbled fawn basane, black title pieces on spine. First edition of this botany problem book, whose goal is to find the name of the plant from a description. To educate the neophytes, the author proposes to use the methods developed by Tournefort, Linné and Jussieu. This volume is accompanied by an album of engraved plates representing natural specimens enhanced with hand colors. Some are signed on the plate, R. Turpin. The name of Philibert would be in reality the pseudonym of a certain Legendre, "former Councillor at the Parliament", who, after "serious mistakes", had to change jobs and hid under the name Philibert which he used to publish six scientific works between 1797 and 1805 (according to Quérard).
