IMPORTANT CUPBOARD IN WALNUT MOLDED AND CARVED - Lot 129
IMPORTANT CUPBOARD IN WALNUT MOLDED AND CARVED opening with two doors, the cornice with offsets, dentils, foliage, mask of Apollo and palmettes resting on pilasters with Ionic capitals with flutes and asperges, the leaves decorated with foliage panels in the lower part and historiated in the upper part illustrating the Baptism of Christ and the Beheading of Saint Barbara; (a drawer brought back at a later date in the lower part). Strasbourg, early 18th century. H.: 243 cm, W.: 211 cm, D.: 91 cm. Bibliography : F. Levy-Coblentz, L'Art du meuble en Alsace, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, 1985, tome II, p. 366. Made according to the rules of the new corporation of the French carpenters of the city of Strasbourg established in 1701, this cabinet made of a single body was most probably presented as a masterpiece of accession to the mastery by a carpenter wishing to be received within this corporation. Among the carpenters admitted to the corporation in the first twenty years of the eighteenth century, one of them, Philibert Charrette (received master in 1706), is a likely candidate for the attribution of this piece of furniture.
