SPARRMAN (André) Voyage au Cap de Bonne-Espérance, et autour du Monde avec le capitaine Cook, et principalement dans le pays des Hottentots et des Caffres. With maps, figures and intaglio plates. Paris, Buisson, 1787. 2 volumes in-4; frontispiece, one folding map and 15 plates hors texte (including 5 folding plates). wet-stamped by Raquine. Glazed marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, red title-pieces and black end-pieces, minor damage to both headpieces, gilt roulette on edges, red edges. First edition of the French translation by Le Tourneur. A Swedish naturalist and pupil of Linné, Sparrman went to the Cape of Good Hope in 1772 to plant. Returning to the Cape in 1775, he practiced medicine and surgery there, while continuing to herorize in these lands, from which he brought back an important collection of plants and animals at the end of 1776.
