17th CENTURY SPANISH CASE, - Lot 23
17th CENTURY SPANISH CASE, ENTOURAGE OF Bartolomeo Esteban Murillo ATTRIBUTED TO Juan Simon Gutiérrez (1634-1718) Saint Francis rescued by an angel Canvas. 156 x 106 cm. (Framed in the mid-19th century). Louis-Philippe period frame. This painting has been stripped of its repaints, but not subsequently retouched. Professor Enrique Valdivieso has confirmed in a letter that this good-quality Sevillian painting is not by Murillo, but probably by one of his immediate disciples. On a personal level, the work evokes the style of his pupil Juan Simon Gutiérrez, who worked in Seville from the 1660s onwards. The French frame from the 1840s-1850s that accompanies the painting suggests that it was brought back from Spain at a time when collections of Spanish paintings were being built up in France, such as that of King Louis-Philippe. Purchases of paintings in Spain were encouraged by "desamortizacion", the forced sale of religious property imposed by the Spanish government.
