ALBINUS (Bernhard Siegfried) Explicatio... - Lot 825 - Briscadieu
ALBINUS (Bernhard Siegfried) Explicatio tabularum anatomicarum Bartholomaei Eustachii, anatomici summi. Accedit tabularum editio nova. Leide, Langerak and Verbeek, 1744. In folio: 4f., 28pp., 277pp., (3); illustrated with 89 plates (4 plates for figures I to VIII; 7 triple plates (XIX to XXI, XXIII to XXVI); 32 double plates placed opposite and accompanied by letters or figures referring to the notes of Albinus) engraved by J. Wandelaar. ½ brown pastiche morocco, spine ornamented with gilt fleurons and fillets, brown title page, modern endpapers. First edition of this remarkable work of anatomy containing the 47 plates made in 1552 by Bartolomeo Eustachius, enriched with 42 plates placed opposite and accompanied by letters or numbers referring to the notes of Albinus. Albinius is considered, along with Vesalius and Fallope, as one of the three great founders of modern anatomy. Eustachius published only 8 of these plates in his Opuscula Anatomica in 1574, the others were forgotten in the Vatican reserves and rediscovered only at the beginning of the 18th century. Provenance: 2 printed bookplates of Dr Piergiorgio Borio (Milan, 1986).
