Good documentation accompanied by observations on the population, social classes, trade and economy. A part of the work is devoted to trade with the colonies. Work by Victor Riqueti, father of the great and famous orator. The first work in which the Marquis de Mirabeau (who considered this work as his masterpiece), recently acquired to the physiocratic theories, expresses the doctrine of his school; he had moreover many fervent supporters but also fierce detractors, and that led him to detention in the dungeon of Vincennes. The book was a great success; severely criticizing the tax system in force and denouncing the farmers general, he put forward proposals for fair taxation and collection. His ideas, shared by many, gained ground and found expression in the great financial crisis that brought about the end of the Ancien Régime.
