Demonology - Lot 228
In-8: XL, 318pp. illustrated with a frontispiece (author's interview with the Devil); scattered spotting. ½ period brown basane, smooth ornate spine, red title-piece, leather lacking at foot. Work in which we prove ... the existence of witches, the certainty of apparitions, the faith due to miracles, the truth of possessions ... A very precise history of magic ... Paris, Brajeux, ; Mongie ainé, 1819. In-8 : XXII, 152pp. ½ black chagrin, title and gilt fillets on smooth spine. Unique edition, "exceedingly rare" according to Guaita, of this very curious Jesuitical work so absurd in terms of miracles of all kinds, that the Congregation of Rome spent considerable sums to remove copies from private libraries (Caillet III, 531). Set of 2 works.
