Copy of Henry Russell - Lot 248
Copy of Henry Russell BERALDI (Henri) One hundred years in the Pyrenees. Paris, 1898-1904. 7 volumes large in-8: VIII, 208pp. / VIII, 230pp. / VIII, 186pp. / 3f., 172pp. / 3f., 146pp. / 3f., 186pp. / 3f., 354pp. ; vignettes on titles by Charles JOUAS. Edition of 300 copies. Minor foxing. Autograph letter from Henri Beraldi to Count Henry Russell. Contemporary ½ black chagrin, gilt titles and fillets on slightly lightened spine nerves. A good copy. First edition of the essential history book, the first to be acquired by every serious bibliophile. It reads like a novel, with an inimitable style: lively, incisive, humorous as hell, he needs less than two sentences to bury the writers he doesn't like, but when he likes, he doesn't count. The 1977 reprint by Les Amis du Livre Pyrénéen is a credit to Beraldi for the quality of its editing. Both are complemented by Jacques Labarère's no less indispensable Bibliographie Pyrénéiste. Provenance: from the library of Earl Henry Russell.
