SANCHO LE SAGE, don (King of Navarre) - CASTILLON d'ASPECT (Jean Heliodore CASTILLON dit)
Los Paramientos de la Caza, ou Règlements sur la Chasse en général publiés en l'année 1180, avec une introduction et des annotations du traducteur. Paris, lib. centrale d'Agriculture et de Jardinage, Goin, sd. [1874].
In-12: 106pp, (1). Autograph letter from Baron de Lassus to Baron Dunoyer de Noirmont.
Green morocco à la Duseuil signed PETIT succ. de SIMIER, ornate ribbed spine, deer head irons in spandrels, double gilt fillet on edges, interior lace, gilt edges. A fine copy.
Extremely rare first edition. Very few copies listed, only 2 in private collections. A complete treatise on hunting as it was practiced at the end of the 12th century. Presented by Castillon d'Aspet as one of the oldest Western treatises on hunting. Translated from the original, which was kept in the provincial archives of Pamplona. This is the most complete work on hunting regulations during the Middle Ages.
Brutails, after Gutérez de La Vega, expressed doubts about the book's authenticity. It has since been proven that Castillon d'Aspet created a literary deception by assembling fragments of the "Fueros" of Navarre, the "Livre de la Chasse de Gaston Phébus", etc., mixing elements and characters from the 12th and 14th centuries (!!); shamelessly, he did not hesitate to dedicate this deception to Baron Marc de Lassus (Thiébaud 828).
Provenances: Gift from Baron de Lassus to Baron Dunoyer de Noirmont - Printed bookplate from the library of Count Graefulhe - Printed bookplate of Marie-Thérèse de La Béraudière.
