OEnology - Lot 188
OEnology BERTALL (Charles Albert d'Arnoux dit) La Vigne - Voyage autour des Vins de France - Étude Physiologique, Anecdotique, Historique, Humoristique et même Scientifique. Paris, Plon, 1878. In-4; illustrated with a frontispiece, 94 full-page plates and nearly 400 drawings in the text, all by BERTALL. Contemporary ½ red chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated, rubbing and wear from use, edges gilt. First edition. Reviews the different vintages of Burgundy, Gironde and Champagne and tells, with great humor, a host of amusing anecdotes about wines, vines, winemakers, owners and tasters. The full-page illustrations are all entitled "Acteurs et Actrices - Costumes et Visages" and numbered from 1 to 94 (Bitting and Vicaire state in their respective bibliographies that there are 64 plates hors texte: this is a typing error for 94); moreover, the plates are included in the pagination. Vicaire will correct this error in his Manuel de l'Amateur de Livres du XIXe (Vicaire I 439-440)(Vicaire Gastro - 87).
