FOURCASSIÉ (Jean) - Lot 150
FOURCASSIÉ (Jean) University of Paris. Romanticism and the Pyrenees. Thèse pour le doctorat ès lettres Paris, NRF Gallimard, 1940. In-8: 4f., 440pp. illustrated with a frontispiece and 10 hors texte photo plates on glossy paper reproducing prints and lithographs. ½ red chagrin, smooth spine decorated with gilt irons, publisher's beige cover retained. First edition. This work also exists with the title and cover on the letterhead of the "Université de Paris" (rarer, like this copy). Thèse pour le Doctorat ès lettres présentée à la Faculté des Lettres de l'Université de Paris" also published (oh honor for a thesis!) by Gallimard. A fundamental and highly readable anthology, it lists many of the fine prose writers and small-time writers who haunted our mountains (especially the valleys). The criticism is sometimes harsh, but always objective. It's the "Hundred Years" of literature, almost a complement to Beraldi's Pyrenean fresco. Once you've read it, it's hardly surprising that a publisher like Gallimard should be interested in this important study (printed by Privat in Toulouse) (Labarère 596).
