Georg Baun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (c. 1535-1590) Ea - Lot 250
Georg Baun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (c. 1535-1590) Early plan of Paris- Lutecia Lutecia vulgari Nomine Paris, Urbs Galliae Maxima Colored engraving 1572 H. 37; W. 49 cm Framed Fine example of this emblematic plan of 16th-century Paris, which appears in volume 1 of Braun & Hogenberg's 6-volume Civititas Orbis Terrarum, edited and annotated by theologian and publisher Georg Braun, and extensively illustrated with engravings by cartographer Franz Hogenberg. The Civitates was conceived as a counterpart to Abraham Ortelius' universal atlas, the Theatrum, published in 1570, and is a copy of the "Premier Plan" of around 1530, which Sebastian Munster also used in a smaller representation for his "Cosmographia", 1569.
