[BÉRAIN (Jean)] - Lot 26
[BÉRAIN (Jean)] Ornaments Designed by BÉRAIN. Paris: the author at the Louvre Galleries, n.d. [c. 1711]. In folio: engraved title page and 15 plates. Contemporary fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, fleurs-de-lis between panels, fleurs-de-lis in the spandrels on the covers, scuffs and normal wear, gilt roulette on the edges. Excerpt from this superb collection of ornamental engravings (wall decorations, grotesques, vases & urns, capitals) after J. Berain, draftsman, engraver, and ornamental artist. After studying with Ch. Le Brun, he was appointed draftsman to Louis XIV in 1674 and official decorator of the Royal Academy of Music in 1680; his style revitalized the 16th-century “grotesque” style and foreshadowed the Rococo movement that would influence all of Europe.
