Illustrated Bible - Lot 28
Illustrated Bible BIBLE - KRAUSS (Johann Ulrich) Historischer Bilder-Bibel Erster Theil, containing illustrations of the stories of all the patriarchs from the Book of Moses. Augsburg, Krauss, 1705. (Followed by) Heilige Augen- und Gemüths-Lust, depicting all the Sunday, feast, and holiday readings, not only from the Gospels... Augsburg, Krauss, [1706]. Several parts in one folio volume: 2f., engraved plates with 2 illustrations each, numbered 1 through 135 (number 60 is duplicated in the numbering, for a total of 136 plates) – 5f. (including a frontispiece), 120 folios, each engraved with two illustrations (and an unnumbered frontispiece leaf). Contemporary grained fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, minor restoration at the top, black title label, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with fleurons in the spandrels, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt wheel on the inside, gilt edges. A very fine copy. Two works combined into a single volume. Third edition of the illustrated Bible: “Of all the illustrated Bibles published to date, this one is the most sumptuous. It highlights the full richness of the forms and ideas of the Baroque era.” Each scene is again depicted in an allegorical and emblematic manner in the lower half. Kraus not only drew inspiration from French engravers of the late 17th century but also expanded the illustrations of biblical themes to include emblematic representations, which notably influenced the design of the postils he published. The first edition appeared in 1698. Regarding the second work: A first edition and superb deluxe copy of Kraus’s emblematic interpretation of biblical scenes, which represents one of the highlights of the Baroque period in Southern Germany. This monumental emblem book was conceived as a sequel to his famous illustrated Bible, or *Bilderbibel*, and follows the same illustrative format, in which the upper part of each plate contains an illustration of a biblical scene and the lower part a circular emblem engraving. Johann Ulrich Krauss was one of Augsburg’s most famous engravers and publishers in the latter part of the 17th century. Provenance: printed bookplate, initials “TS” with the inscription “Sage.”
