CALLOT (Jacques) - Lot 33
CALLOT (Jacques) The Misery and Misfortunes of War. Illustrated by Jacques CALLOT and illuminated by ISRAËL, his friend. Paris, self-published, 1633. Oblong quarto, engraved title page and 18 plates cut before the line surrounding the margin. Size 18.5 x 9.3 cm except for the title page (full page of beige paper). Glued at the corners onto flexible paper. Handcrafted notebook of flexible paper, beige cover with complete engraved title, pages bound with cord, stitched onto white backing paper. Complete set, one of Callot’s finest, in a later print on thin buff vellum. Three states of this set are known. This is the third state, in which the “excudit d’Israël” on plates numbered 2 through 18, as well as the mention of the privilege on plates 2 through 17, have been removed. These words have been replaced by “Callot inv. Et sec.” On No. 18, the inscription “Callot fecit” has been left intact; the words “Israel excudit” have been erased. The margin is surrounded by a square line (Meaume, Research on the Life and Works of Jacques Callot—564–581).
