Bible CALMET (Augustin), Dom The Holy Bible in Latin and French, with literal, critical, and historical notes, prefaces, and dissertations… Paris: Martin; Coignard & Boudet; Mariette; Guérin, 1748–50. 14 in-4 volumes, illustrated with 37 plates and maps as separate inserts, most of which are fold-outs (Volume I: 7 plates - Volume II: 8 plates - Volume III: 3 plates - Volume IV: 13 plates - Volume V: 2 plates - Volume VI: 1 plate - Volume IX: 1 plate - Volume X: 1 plate - Volume XII: 1 plate; and 4 typographic tables). Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin, ornate ribbed spine, red title labels, bronze volume numbers, double blind-stamped fillets framing the covers, gilt roulettes on the edges, red edges, some scuffing and normal wear. A fine copy. First edition of this famous Bible, also known as the Bible of Vence. Particularly sought after for its beautiful plates illustrating religious objects, maps, etc. “The first edition of 1748–50 is more beautiful” (Brunet).
