DU TILLOT (Jean Baptiste) - Lot 55
DU TILLOT (Jean Baptiste) Memoirs on the History of the Fête des Foux, Which Was Once Celebrated in Several Churches. Lausanne and Geneva, Bousquet, 1751. In-12; illustrated with 12 separate plates depicting the symbols of the festival. Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin, smooth spine with decorative embellishments, title label missing, cap ends trimmed, scuffs and signs of wear, cold-stamped fillet framing the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. The first part contains research on the Feast of Fools, which was once celebrated in several churches in France; the second part contains interesting details on the Brotherhood of the Mad Mother of Dijon, established around 1381 and abolished by an edict of Louis XIII. The priests would gather for the Feast of Fools and perform licentious songs during a parody of a religious ceremony, turning the altar into a buffet, drinking and eating. The Brotherhood of the Mad Mother organized gastronomic gatherings where everyone brought a dish. The leader, known as the Mad Mother, had a full court of dignitaries and an entourage of more than 200 men, mostly winegrowers (Caillet 3475) (Oberlé 543).
