Morocco leather with the coat of arms of the Palatine Prince - Lot 57
Morocco leather with the coat of arms of the Palatine Princess DURAND (Catherine) Les Petits-Soupers de l'été, de l'année 1699, ou aventures galantes avec l'origine des fées. Paris, Musier; Rolin, 1702. 2 volumes, in-12 format. A few minor handwritten corrections (printed words crossed out and replaced in ink). Contemporary red morocco leather, ornate ribbed spines, fleurs-de-lis between panels, central gilt coat of arms of Elisabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, triple gilt fillets framing the covers, scuffs, stains, and normal wear and tear, gilt rollers on the edges and inside covers, dented corners, gilt marbled edges. A rare volume. In this collection of juxtaposed tales published in 1702, Madame Durant embraces a variety of genres, thus following the trend toward diversification in tales and short stories of the late 17th century. Provenance: A copy bearing the coat of arms of Elisabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, known as the Palatine Princess (1652–1722), who married, in 1671, Philippe, Duke of Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, whose second wife she became, and thus became Duchess of Orléans, bearing the title “Madame” at court. She was the mother of the Regent. She left behind memoirs on the private life of Louis XIV and on all the figures at court. She owned a library consisting mainly of theological works and containing nearly all of Bossuet’s writings (OHR 2564, fer 8).
