[FENOUILLOT DE FALBAIRE (Charles-Georges)] - Lot 65
[FENOUILLOT DE FALBAIRE (Charles-Georges)] *L'Honnête criminel, ou l'amour filial* (The Honest Criminal, or Filial Love), a drama in five acts in verse. Amsterdam and Paris: Merlin, 1768. In-8; illustrated with 5 plates in two states (probably from the two editions of 1767 and 1768) engraved by De Launay, Simonet, Le Vasseur, and Binet after drawings by GRAVELOT. ½ Jansenist morocco with corners, title gilt on ribbed spine, gilt edges. Second edition, revised, corrected, and expanded to include the story of the play’s hero, published one year after the original. It can be considered a true second original edition because the epistle to Jean-Charles-Philibert Trudaine de Montigny, Intendant General of Finances, was rewritten, as were the preface and the text of the play. One need only compare the first two lines of the first scene. In the 1767 edition, the lines read: “The sunrise, in that brilliant distance, — Has never seemed so beautiful to me as this morning,” which became, in the 1768 edition: “The sea appears calm, the sky cloudless— Promising the sailors a day free of storms.” The title itself changed, from *The Honest Criminal* to *The Honest Criminal, or Filial Love*.
