Demonology - Lot 69
Demonology HÉDELIN (François) On Savage Satyrs, Monsters, and Demons: Their Nature and Worship, Against the Opinion of Those Who Have Considered Satyrs to Be a Distinct Species of Men, Separate from the Descendants of Adam. Paris, Buon, 1627. In-8. Contemporary fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, small loss at the bottom of the cap, double gilt fillet framing the covers, scuffs and normal wear, mottled edges. First edition of this “work of the utmost rarity,” according to Guaïta and Caillet. This treatise on the nature of satyrs is a book as curious as it is erudite. According to the author, satyrs are divided into three species: first, the brute beasts, animals he likens to monkeys; second, the monsters, half-man, half-goat hybrids, and finally the demons, whom the pagans worshipped during the Bacchanalia and the sorcerers during their sabbats (Caillet II, 5025)(Guaïta 386).
