Morocco leather binding signed Duru - Lot 75
Morocco leather binding signed Duru LA FONTAINE (Jean de) Tales and Short Stories in Verse. Amsterdam, Desbordes, 1685. 2 volumes in one in-12 volume: 8f., 206pp., (1) - 4f., 183pp., (1) 19th-century red morocco bindings signed DURU 1854, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt bands framing the covers, gilt bands on the edges, interior garlands. A fine copy in good condition. The fabulist achieved his first literary successes thanks to these tales, which were described as libertine, mischievous, risqué, bawdy, erotic, or even bawdy. As soon as his collection of tales was published, critics applauded it, and its success was such that the work had to be reprinted twice within the year. DURU (1803–1884): Bookbinder in Paris, born in Claye-Souilly (Seine-et-Marne). He worked from 1840 to 1863. His gilder was Marius Michel, who joined his staff in 1846. He handed over management of his workshop to his partner René-Victor Chambolle in 1863; the bindings were then signed “Chambolle-Duru”; René Chambolle (1873–1915) succeeded his father and also retained the business name “Chambolle-Duru.” Hippolyte Duru died in 1884.
