LA MOTHE FÉNÉLON (François de) Works of François de Salignac de la Mothe Fénélon, tutor to the children of France, translated into French from the Vulgate. Paris, Didot, 1787–1792. 9 volumes in-4; two frontispiece portraits. Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin with a glossy finish, smooth, decorated spines, black title labels, red volume numbers, gilt fillets and cross-shaped gilt metal fittings, 3 cap covers worn down with small losses of leather, 3 spines cracked at the edges, delicate garlands framing the covers, gilt fillets on the edges, interior scrolls, a few dulled corners, some scuffing, gilt edges. François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, known as Fénelon, was a French clergyman, theologian, and writer from a noble family in the Périgord region. After becoming the spiritual advisor to Madame de Maintenon, he was appointed tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, grandson of Louis XIV. Admitted to the Académie française in 1693, Fénelon wrote several works, including *The Adventures of Telemachus*, son of Ulysses, an educational novel of adventure and travel considered a critique of Louis XIV’s policies and which had a considerable literary influence.
