MARMONTEL (Jean-François) - Lot 94
MARMONTEL (Jean-François) The Incas, or the Destruction of the Peruvian Empire. Paris: Lacombe, 1777. 2 volumes, in-8; illustrated with 11 separate engravings (including one frontispiece) drawn by Moreau. Contemporary green sheepskin bindings, smooth, decorated spines with red title labels and volume numbers, a stretched headband, triple gilt fillets framing the covers, and gilt fillets on the edges. A fine copy. First edition. Using the history of the conquest of Peru as the backdrop for this novel, Marmontel delivers a lengthy plea for tolerance, building on the ideas he had already developed in *Bélisaire*. Through this work, he criticizes King Louis X. The Sorbonne condemned the work. Provenance: From the library of Amédée Rigaud, honorary stockbroker in Paris, with his printed bookplate marked “R” and the motto “Bona fide sine fraude”
