NICOLE (Pierre) The Imaginers and the Visionaries. A Treatise on Human Madness. A Fair Judgment, Drawn from the Works of St. Augustine. Letters from Sir Nicolas Pauillon, Bishop of Alet, to Sir Hardouyn Perefixe, Archbishop of Paris. Cologne, Marteau, 1683. In-8. Contemporary brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, scuffs and signs of wear, gilt wheel on edges, red edges. Writing under the pseudonym of Sieur de Damvilliers, Pierre Nicole published this work (under the pseudonym Damvilliers) to defend Port-Royal against the Jesuits’ attacks and their accusations of heresy. The second part is directed against Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin, “the inspiration behind Pascal’s *Provinciales*.” Nicole wrote this work to demonstrate the childishness of the accusations against Jansenism” (Guaïta).
