Crimea - Turkey - Armenia - Greece - Lot 112
Crimea - Turkey - Armenia - Greece PEYSSONEL (Claude-Charles de) Treatise on Trade in the Black Sea. Paris, Cuchet, 1787. 2 large 8vo volumes, paperback; one fold-out chart (in Volume 1). Copy with wide margins, untrimmed (small rodent marks along the outer margin on the first 10 pages of Volume 1). Contemporary marbled beige paper cover. First edition. As French Consul General in Smyrna and the Crimea, the author served as a liaison between the French government and Turkish, Greek, and Armenian merchants in the region. Peyssonel describes the intense trade (fabrics, carpets, metals, medicines and foodstuffs, wine, tobacco, and other food products, as well as slaves) in great detail; one chapter focuses on the most productive caviar sites, the various grades, and the quantities produced. In the appendix is a treatise on the civil, political, and military status of Tartary.
