Morocco leather binding by Koehler PRIOLO (Benjamin) Historiae Galliae, Libri XII. Ab Excessu Ludovici XIII. de Rebus Gallicis, Historiarum. Utrecht, Elzevier, 1669. Small 12mo; engraved half-title and frontispiece, 508 pages. 19th-century cherry morocco leather, signed KOEHLER (signed at the bottom of the spine), decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, fine interior lace, gilt edges, slight rubbing and minor wear to the corners. Benjamin Priolo’s famous history of France, covering the political and military events from the death of Louis XIII (in 1643) through the mid-17th century, with a particular focus on the regency of Anne of Austria and the ministry of Cardinal Mazarin. Priolo, who held diplomatic posts, offers a historical and political chronicle of France’s tumultuous years during the Fronde and the consolidation of royal power under Louis XIV. * François Koehler: a worker at THOUVENIN, a bookbinder and gilder based in Paris, who won a silver medal at his first exhibition in 1834 and again at the 1849 exhibition.
