Rare and sought-after—Maroquin by Chambolle-Duru - Lot 121
Rare and sought-after—Maroquin by Chambolle-Duru RACINE (Jean) The Works of Racine. Paris, Barbin, 1676. 2 volumes in-12: 5f., 364pp. (frontispiece and 5 plates) / 7f., 324pp., 2f. - 5f., 74pp. (frontispiece and 5 plates); illustrated with 2 frontispiece half-titles, the first of which was engraved by Sébastien Leclerc after Le Brun, and 10 separate plates by Chauveau. Red morocco leather signed CHAMBOLLE-DURU, spine with decorated raised bands, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, minor signs of wear, gilt interior edging, gilt edges. A fine copy. First and very rare collected edition, with the title of Volume I revised. The second volume contains the play *Phèdre* for the first time, though it is not listed in the table of contents. This is therefore the second state described by Tchemerzine. Includes 10 plays: *La Thébaïde* or *Les Frères Ennemis*—*Alexandre Le Grand*—*Andromaque*—*Britannicus*—*Les Plaideurs*—*Bérénice*—*Bajazet*—*Mithridate*—*Iphigénie*—*Phèdre & Hippolyte*. In 1676, Racine revised the preface to *Alexandre* and had the two pages comprising it, as well as the two introductory pages of Volume I, bound in hardcover; he had Volume I reprinted with the date 1676 in order to harmonize the edition (Tchemerzine IX, 355).
