[RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas Edme)] A Monument to the Physical and Moral Costume of the Late Eighteenth Century, or A Portrait of Life, Illustrated with Figures Drawn and Engraved by MOREAU the Younger. Neuwied on the Rhine, Typographical Society, 1789. In folio: 1 leaf, 37 pp. (some unnumbered, one pagination error); illustrated with 26 separate plates (24 of which are after MOREAU the Younger, engraved on copper by Martini, Trier, Helman, Baquoy, Guttenberg, De Launay, Halbou, Dambrun, etc.; the two unsigned plates, *La Matinée* and *La Surprise*, were engraved after Freudenberg by Bosse and Ingouf). Plates protected by endpapers. Scattered pinholes. 19th-century black half-chagrin binding with corner pieces, title and gilt lines on a ribbed spine; normal wear and scuffing. A rare and sought-after first edition of Restif de la Bretonne’s text, commissioned by a publisher wishing to reuse Moreau’s plates, originally published in 1775 and 1776 under the title “A Series of Engravings Illustrating the Customs and Costumes of the French in the 18th Century.” *Le Monument du costume* is one of the most famous illustrated works of the 18th century, particularly sought after for its illustrations, which offer enchanting scenes from the daily life of the French aristocracy (Cohen 881) (Brunet III, 1896).

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF SALE

A public exhibition prior to the sale enables prospective buyers to examine the books, works, and documents offered for auction.

Any purchaser participating in the sale, by whatever means and from any country, shall be deemed to have read both the catalogue descriptions relating to the lots on which they bid and the present conditions of sale. Catalogue collations do not necessarily imply that the works are complete; they merely indicate the contents as identified. Plates and illustrations not included in the pagination are checked and verified unless otherwise stated or marked “not collated.”

No claims will be accepted once the lot has been knocked down. Purchasers are requested to inspect their acquisitions carefully upon purchase or receipt and, where possible, to collate them in the auction room immediately after the sale. No claim will be accepted once the items have been removed from the auction premises.

For books and lots sold outside the catalogue (or for lots announced during the sale), no claim may be made after the hammer has fallen, as buyers are given the opportunity to inspect and assess the contents beforehand. Information provided for both catalogue and non-catalogue lots is given for guidance only. Buyers are strongly advised to verify the contents during the viewing period and, if necessary, at the conclusion of the viewing, in order to avoid any inconvenience.

Illustrations reproduced in the catalogue are provided for reference only and cannot be guaranteed to be an exact representation of the originals. Dimensions are given for guidance purposes only.

Payment is due immediately after the sale. All the property is sold in the condition in which it is offered for sale. No claim can be accepted after the fall of the hammer. All prospective buyers shall have the opportunity to inspect each lot for sale during the pre-sale exhibition in order to satisfy themselves as to characteristics, size, colours, repairs or restoration. Any possible modifications in the conditions of sale or in the descriptions of the catalog will be announced verbally during the sale and noted on the official report. The successful purchaser will be the highest bidder and will be obliged to give his or her name and address. In case of contesting at the time of awarding, that is if two or more bidders simultaneously carried an equivalent bid, either aloud, or by sign and demand at the same time this object after the pronouncement of the "awarded/adjugé" word, the aforementioned object will immediately be handed in auction to the proposed price by the bidders and the public will be allowed to bid again.

Cash in Euros: for French resident (private or professionals) to an equal or lower amount of € 1 000 per sale (but to an amount of € 15 000 for a non-French resident), bayer’s premium included.

A bidding form can be found at the end of the catalogue. Please fill this form and attach bank account details and a copy of your identity card or passport. BRISCADIEU BORDEAUX and/or Me ANTOINE BRISCADIEU reserve the right not to record an absentee bid if it is not complete or if we consider that the client does not offer all the guarantees for the deals; without any possible recourse. Please ensure that we receive your written bids the day before the auction, 8 pm.

DELIVERY, TRANSPORT & STORAGE FEES

Once the hammer falls, the new buyer becomes the owner and so becomes responsible for the lot. We do not assume any liability for loss or damage to items which may occur after the hammer falls. Please note that purchases can only be collected after payment in full.

Small purchases are held on free deposit at the auction house for 12 days. In addition, storage costs will be charged: Object, table or Wine box: 20 €/month.

We do not proceed to any shipping.

For people who bought by telephone, via absentee bid or live, items can be sent : for this service, please contact the company mentioned which will be in charge of the packaging and the shipment.

Buyers are invited to organize themselves the shipping if they don’t agree with these conditions.
