Morocco leather bound with the coat of arms of Andrault de Langeron [WHATELY (Thomas)] The Art of Laying Out Modern Gardens, or The Art of English Gardens, to which the translator has added a Preliminary Discourse on the Origin of the Art, notes on the text, and a detailed description of the gardens at Stowe. Paris, Jombert, 1771. In-8: 1f., LXIV, 404, 1f. (approval); a fold-out map of the house and gardens of Stowe in Buckinghamshire, belonging to Richard Grenville, Lord Temple. Slight angular light discoloration at the top. Contemporary red morocco, decorated ribbed spine, central gilt coat of arms, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, slight wear from use, gilt inner wheel, gilt edges. Provenance: From the collection of Charles-Claude Arnault de Langeron (1720–1791), Marquis de Langeron and de Maulévrier, Count of Chabrières, former governor of Briançon, then governor of Brest, second-in-command of the province of Brittany, field marshal and later lieutenant general. Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
