Architecture - Lot 156
Architecture BOSC (Ernest) A Comprehensive Dictionary of Architecture and the Related Sciences and Arts. Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1877–1880. 4 volumes, in-4 format; frontispiece portrait in volume 4, illustrations in the text—including numerous full-page illustrations—and 36 separate chromolithographic plates (6/9/11/10) numbered I–CII. Contemporary half black shagreen, spine with raised bands, gilt fillets, and fleurons. A fine copy. In his preface, Bosc could not help but mention the similar work published by his illustrious colleague Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, which had appeared 20 years earlier. He outlines the advantages of his new dictionary, noting that Viollet le Duc’s work is not truly a dictionary, that it is devoted solely to the Middle Ages, and that, given the progress of the times, it has become obsolete.
