COLBERT (N.J.), Marquis de Chabanais - Lot 164
COLBERT (N.J.), Marquis de Chabanais Traditions and Memories, or Memoirs Concerning the Times and Life of General Auguste Colbert (1793–1809). Paris, Firmin Didot, 1863. 5 volumes, large 8vo; illustrated with maps and plans, some spanning two pages. Printed on laid paper; the paper is very white except for a few small pinholes on the first few leaves of each volume. ½ gray Bradel-style percaline binding, smooth, faded spines, titles, volume numbers, and small gilt lettering; untrimmed copy. General Colbert (1777–1809) enlisted as a volunteer soldier at the age of 16 in 1793. He fought in the Italian, Egyptian, and Syrian campaigns, and later saw action on most of the battlefields during the campaigns in Germany, Prussia, Poland, and Spain, where he was killed in 1809. These “memoirs” are more accurately biographical recollections, supported in particular by family archives, compiled by his son.
