Indochina - Ceramics - Lot 233
Indochina - Ceramics RIVIÈRE (Henri) Ceramics in the Art of the Far East. A collection of one hundred sixty-two pieces reproduced in color from originals selected from museums and collections in France and abroad. Preface by Charles Vignier. Paris, Albert Lévy, Librairie centrale des Beaux-Arts, 1923. 2 folio-sized volumes in loose-leaf format; 100 color plates of ceramics from China, Korea, the Luzon Islands, and Japan, mounted on fine paper and evenly distributed throughout the two volumes. Scattered foxing on the title pages. Limited edition of 300 copies on Rives paper. Housed in color-printed cloth folders with drawstring closures, inside printed slipcases in need of restoration (some covers have detached sections). Unique first edition of this impressive and important monograph. The Chinese, Korean, and Japanese ceramics come mostly from French private collections, including those of Rivière himself, the famous collector Raymond Koechlin, the antiquarian Garbis Kalebdjian, and the fashion designer Jacques Doucet. This work follows his similar study on Islamic art, *La Céramique dans l'art musulman* (1913), and is just as magnificently produced, with the plates printed in color.
