Aquitaine - Lot 263
Aquitaine BELLEYME (Pierre de) Map of the Generality of Aquitaine dedicated to Monsieur de Néville, intendant of the province. Signed, dated, and inscribed, (1787). Folded, mounted map in square 8vo format. Dimensions: 132.5 x 153 cm. In a period red boiled-paper cardboard slipcase, with gilded lace framing the edges. Gilded title vignette on a black background. An extremely rare map extending from the mouth of the Garonne River, north of Bordeaux, to the Spanish border in the east, and to Toulouse in the west. The work of geographer and engineer Pierre de Belleyme, it is based on his famous and detailed “Map of Guyenne.” That map had been commissioned to provide more detailed information than that found in the “General Map of France” directed by Cassini. Provenance: Printed bookplate from the Mony Library, featuring three silver besants (the de Gères family, originally from Fezensac in the Gers department). The Château de Mony is located in Rions in the Gironde department.
