Closs-bound volumes VALOIS (Marguerite de) Tales and Short Stories by Marguerite de Valois, Queen of Navarre, rendered in elegant language adapted to the tastes of the time and enriched with engravings. Amsterdam, Gallet, 1698. 2 volumes, in-12; illustrated with a frontispiece (the same in both volumes) and numerous half-page engravings after GOERE. Red morocco bindings signed CLOSS, ribbed spines, title and gilt fillets within panels, double gilt fillet framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, interior roulette, gilt edges. A fine copy. Included: VOLTAIRE (François Marie AROUET de): *La Henriade*, a poem in ten cantos. Paris, Chrétien fils, 1838. In-8; illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Henry IV and 4 separate plates. Text framed by a wide lace border. Contemporary black calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, the letter “D” surmounted by a crown in the central panel, a cracked bit at the foot, gilt lace with fleurons in the spandrels framing the covers, roulette on the cut edges at the corners, marbled edges. Closs, a Parisian bookbinder and gilder. His workshop was located at 14 Rue Boucher in 1838, then, from 1840 onward, at 66 Rue Saint-Germain-L’auxerrois. He also practiced gilding, a craft he learned from Kleinhans. According to G. Trantz, the bindings known as “Fanfares de Thouvenin” were executed by Closs.
