Memoirs - Empire - Louisiana - Martinique - French Guiana - - Lot 348
Memoirs - Empire - Louisiana - Martinique - French Guiana - Empire LAUSSAT (Pierre Clément de), Baron Memoirs of My Life, to My Son, During the Years 1803 and Thereafter, When I Held Public Office, Namely: In Louisiana, as Commissioner of the French Government for the Recapture of This Colony and Its Transfer to the United States; In Martinique, as Colonial Prefect; In French Guiana, as Commander and Administrator for the King. Pau, Vignancour, 1831 (Serres-Castet, Édition du Gave, 2001). 3 parts, in-8. An extremely meticulous facsimile. Printed in a run of 500 copies (only 130 copies were put into circulation; the remainder were destroyed). Half brown calfskin with corners signed DURAND, ribbed spine, gilt headbands and volume numbers, blind-stamped, burgundy title labels, gilt head, original caramel-colored publisher’s covers preserved. The only French reprint, expanded to include a bio-bibliography. The original 1803 edition is extremely rare; the Pau Library holds one copy, as do the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Archives. Two copies have recently come up for sale at the start of this century, but these were certainly the first to appear on the market in decades. (Soulice 305)(Lacaze 192)
