SILVER WATER PITCHER WITH LID IN A BALUSTER SHAPE Round base decorated with gadroons, echoed on the lid; the body is accented with fillets. The covered spout is adorned at its base with an Indian woman’s mask. The spout cover is chased with foliage on an amati background; the handle is coiled. The body is engraved with a later coat of arms beneath a count’s crown. Paris, 1726. Master silversmith Bertin Merger, admitted to the guild in 1695. Weight: 960 g. Height: 26 cm. Hallmarks: mark: A with a crown on the side; reverse mark: crowned merlet. Common mark: Crowned K. Master silversmith. Boar’s head. Condition report: dent at the bottom of the body, scratches. The Indian mask motif is found on many ewers from this period, notably on a water jug by Etienne Hem Maisonrouge from 1728, which is part of the Michel Lacoste donation to the Louvre. A similar pitcher by the same silversmith was sold at Ader’s auction of the Marcel SZTEJNBERG collection on February 4, 2021, lot 136.
