ÉMILE GALLÉ (1846–1904) - Lot 279
ÉMILE GALLÉ (1846–1904) “Soleils” Large trumpet-shaped vase on an overhanging circular base. Multilayered glass piece; the title motif etched with acid and treated with an amber finish on a beige background—the two flower centers depicted by molded cabochons fused in place; one in black glass, the other in emerald glass. One of the flowers is embellished at its base with a metallic leaf inlay. Art Nouveau period. Signed GALLÉ in a so-called “double-line” engraving and bears the inscription “Déposé,” also engraved beneath the base. H.: 35 cm. A minor surface flaw on the black cabochon; significant soiling and internal defects in the base layer and in the layer between the base layer and the upper layer at the point where the vase’s body begins above the base. Public collection and related work: Musée de l’École de Nancy—A variant of this form is held in the institution’s collections under inventory number AD 46. Bibliography: Various Authors—Émile Gallé; The Collection of the Musée de l’École de Nancy—Somogy Éditions d’Art & Musée de l’École de Nancy, Paris, Nancy, reprinted 2014.
