French school around 1800 Portrait of Atahualpa (circa 1500-1533), last Inca emperor Walnut panel, one board not parqueted Height : 34 cm Width : 25 cm Crack. Atahualpa dethroned his half-brother and seized Inca power in 1531. He proudly confronted the conquistador Francesco Pizzaro, refused to convert to Christianity and submit to Charles V. In response, the Spaniards squandered the Inca wealth before putting him to death on August 23, 1533. Our painting is based on the engraving of a lost drawing by Claude Vignon (see Paola Bassani-Patch Claude Vignon 1593-1670, N°176G).
