The arms of Cardinal Mazarin SAMOSATE (Lucien de) Lucien. From the translation of N. Perrot, Sr d'Ablancourt divided into two parts. Paris, Courbe, 1655. 2 volumes in-4 : 9f, 670pp, 15f. (table) / 2f, 712pp, 22f. (table). Minor spotting. Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt fillet framing the boards, fleurs de lys in spandrels, arms of Cardinal Mazarin in the centre of the boards, epidermal damages, cold roulette on the edges, red edges. Second edition published one year after the original. Anatolian rhetorician and satirist, Lucian of Samosata is considered one of the fathers of critical thinking and free thought. In his works, he was particularly interested in dismantling all kinds of magic-religious impostures, among which he placed Christianity. His True Story, in which the character travels on the moon, influenced Cyrano de Bergerac when he wrote his Comic History of the States and Empires of the Moon. Provenance: Arms of Cardinal G.
