The arms of Barillon de Morangis THOU (Jacques-Auguste... - Lot 801 - Briscadieu
The arms of Barillon de Morangis THOU (Jacques-Auguste de) Illustris viri Iacobi Augusti Thuani regii in sanctiore consistorio consiliarii, et in suprema regni Gallici curia praesidis, Historiarum sui temporis ab anno Domini 1543. vsque ad annum 1607. Genevae, la Rovière, 1620. 5 volumes in 4 folio volumes : 16f, 810pp, 1fb, 24f. (index) / 992pp. (one additional handwritten leaf paginated 989 inserted between pages 988 and 989), 7f. / 717pp. 1fb. 13f. (index) - 1fb., 1f. (title), 1fb. 478pp. (several handwritten leaves interspersed in the text, numerous handwritten annotations in the margins), 1fb. 7f. (index) / 1320pp. (handwritten leaves interspersed in the text, numerous handwritten annotations of the time in the margins), 13f. (index). A few small wormholes in the margins of some leaves of 2 volumes. Stuffed with an autograph letter from Jacques -Auguste de THOU. Contemporary fawn granite calf, spine with ornate nerves, double gilt fillet framing the boards, central arms of BARILLON de MORANGIS, corners blunted, red edges. A work of great prestige and fame. One of the first attempts at historical bias in the treatment of religious clashes. This first edition was printed in Geneva to print and avoid ecclesiastical censorship. Until the Enlightenment, the work was a model of historiography, praised by the great philosophers of the time such as Voltaire, Lessing or Herder. The historical part concerning America is remarkable and interesting. Jacques-Auguste de Thou, a great historian of his time, statesman and bibliophile, was known for his search for impartiality and historical objectivity in his works. Provenance: Copy with the coat of arms of Antoine BARILLON de MORANGIS, Lord of Louans and Montigny, master of the king's ordinary requests, intendant of Metz, Alençon, Caen and Orléans. At his death, he left an important library which had been started by his father, President Barillon, and increased by that of his uncle, Barillon de Morangis, director of finance. Printed bookplate of Jacques Vieillard (J.V.)
