ALBINUS (Bernardi Siegfried) - Lot 824
ALBINUS (Bernardi Siegfried) Tabulae Sceleti et Musculorum Corporis Humani. Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), Verbeek, 1747. In plano: 5f. 24 plates on copperplate engraved by J. Wandelaar with explanatory text leaves to the plates. Light staining to margins of a few plates, minor soiling to margins of a few others. ½ tan pastedown calf, spine richly decorated. A good copy. One of the most artistically successful anatomical atlases. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, made from the first living specimen to arrive at the Amsterdam Zoo in 1741. Albinius is considered, along with Vesalius and Fallopius, to be one of the three great founders of modern anatomy.
