DELLA PORTA (Giambattista) De Humana Physiognomonia... - Lot 852 - Briscadieu
DELLA PORTA (Giambattista) De Humana Physiognomonia io. Baptistae Portae Neapolitani, Vici Acquensi, Cacchium, 1586. In folio: 2f. (including engraved title), 272pp; illustrated with a portrait of the author and 85 engravings in the text (4 of which are full-page). There is also a portrait of Cardinal Luigi d'Este to whom the work is dedicated. Minor spotting in places. Italian binding in antique vellum probably 18th century, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, burgundy title page, fillet on the boards with fleurons in spandrels, small restorations to the corners. First edition of this famous work which is also the first book printed in Vico Equense. Kant rightly called it "a milestone in the history of anthropology". This treatise is worthwhile not only for its text but also for its illustration (juxtaposition of human and animal figures). The historical figures are drawn after the medals of Vincent Porta and Adrien Spatafore. Provenance: Double ex-libris Piergiorgio Borio, physician (Milan).
