GAMELIN (Jacques) New collection of Osteology... - Lot 863 - Briscadieu
GAMELIN (Jacques) New collection of Osteology and Myology drawn after nature for the utility of sciences and arts. Toulouse, Desclassan, 1779. 2 volumes in one folio: 85 plates out of text (including 2 frontispieces and a portrait of the Baron de Puymaurin) engraved in etching or in the black manner by Lavallée or Martin and 11 large vignettes (including 2 on the title pages), all accompanied by explanatory tables. Small traces of soiling on a few leaves, light staining and small restorations in the margins of a few leaves. ½ calf pastedown with small corners, richly decorated spine. One of the most remarkable and spectacular treatises of ancient anatomy; superb plates of unparalleled technical precision containing battle scenes, and stunningly staged figures of fantastic appearance including skeletons playing or meditating. The lyricism of certain plates is reminiscent of Goya or Rembrandt; the latter is evoked in a scene around a table bearing anatomical parts with oriental turbaned subjects.
