HEISTER (Laurent) Institutiones Chirurgicae in quibus quicquid ad rem chirurgicam pertinent, optima et novissima ratione pertractatur Amsterdam, Jansson-Waesbergios, 1739. 3 parts in one volume in-4 : 12f., 1249pp., 24f. (index); illustrated with a frontispiece portrait engraved by Wolffgang and 38 folding plates out of text. Scattered foxing, small stains and soiling on a few leaves. Contemporary glossy brown calf, red title on spine, minor restorations to corners, spine ends and edges, gilt roulette on edges, red edges. Anatomist and surgeon considered as the founder of scientific surgery in Germany, Heister (1683-1758) was a student of Frederik Ruysch. He is credited with the invention of a trunk orthosis, the first post-mortem appendectomy, and the introduction of the term "tracheotomy" Waller (4263). The plates represent the arsenal of 18th century surgery and some figures of surgeons operating in street clothes. A great classic of 18th century medical literature.
