Paris - Signed bindings - Lot 1051
Paris - Signed bindings RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas Edme) The 79999 of Paris or the Nocturnal Spectator. Paris, Mérigot, 1791. 15 parts in 8 volumes in-12. i.e. 3359 pages for the first 14 parts in 7 volumes and the 8th volume containing the fifteenth part titled Sept 79999 de Paris (264pp.); illustrated with 15 frontispiece plates. ½ red morocco with corners XIXth signed THIVET & DURVAND, title and tomaisons gilt on spine, edges gilt. Le Spectateur nocturne (Restif de la Bretonne), traces in the first 14 parts an extraordinary picture of Paris before the Revolution. The last two parts published are virulent descriptions of the Revolution which earned the author, because of Marat in particular, a hearing before the Police Committee of the Paris Commune. Fearful, his bookseller abandoned the sale of this monumental work. The fifteenth part describes the "events of the beginning of the Revolution. Instead of the seven 79999 announced in the title, eight 79999 are actually described (the last one being called supernumerary night). Of great documentary value on the time.
